This magnificent marble high relief sculpture of the Ara Pacis Augustae, or Altar of Augustan Peace, was created about 13 BCE to commemorate the triumphant return of Emperor Augustus from the wars in Spain and Gaul, and the Tellus high relief sculpture is on the eastern facade. The central woman is usually identified as Tellus, or Mother Earth, sits amid abundant vegetation with two children in her lap and a veil covers half of her head to show modesty.

The figure to the left of Mother Earth rides on the back of a swan and holds the hem of her billowing gown, representing the land winds. The bulrushes and a spilled jug pouring forth water is carved below the swan. The right of Goddess Tellus sculpture rides a sea serpent, flying above the rushing waves with billowing gown, representing the sea winds. An ox and a sheep sit peacefully at the Tellus high relief sculpture's feet.
